Treatment

We work on a variety of issues that families and individuals with genetic conditions face.

Treatment

For both males and females with HH or Kallmann Syndrome, there are two main forms of treatment.

Hormone replacement therapy OR Fertility Treatment

Hormone Therapy Treatment (HRT)

Hormone replacement therapy involves replacing the missing hormones (testosterone or oestrogen & progesterone) so that the patient can develop most of the physical development normally seen at puberty and have the same hormone level normally seen at that age.

Treatment with testosterone or oestrogen & progesterone will not normally restore fertility in either males or females. Males taking testosterone therapy will not normally experience any testicular growth but will otherwise show all the other physical signs seen after puberty.

Patients with HH or Kallmann syndrome will normally be required to be on some form of HRT most of their lives as the hormones have various uses around the body and normally can improve quality of life and help guard against conditions such osteoporosis or type II diabetes.

Fertility Treatment

Fertility treatment, sometimes called gonadotropin therapy, is a specialized form of treatment that can normally induce fertility in both male and female patients. Gonadotropin therapy can make the testicles or ovaries come out of their dormant state and function correctly.

There are various forms of gonadotropin therapy available, normally it would require the help of a reproductive endocrinologist to obtain the correct therapy.
